James Wellwood and his two oldest children’s descendants.

For this next chapter, I’m going to skip over Samuel, the son of Moses and Jane, and jump right to his brother James.  There are two reasons – first, a James Wellwood witnessed the birth of 4 of Thomas Wellwood’s children, as noted in the last chapter, so there is a natural flow in the book from Thomas to James and second, Samuel is going to be a very difficult, complicated write-up and I’d rather save it for last.

Also, Due to the amount of research required for James Wellwood, I’ve decided to break it up into more than one post, in order to make the reading easier.  Here, then, is his lineage and the details of the lineage of his two oldest children.

James is the oldest child of Moses and Jane that I can document, as I have been unable to locate Moses-the-missionary who may be the oldest son.  James married Sarah Mary Galloway in Glasgow on March 27, 1836, and they had a total of 8 children.  In the 1841 census, they are living in Glasgow St. Thomas parish with their first three children: James (5), Elisebeth (2), and John (4 months).  In 1851 they are joined by Sarah (5) and Margaret (2).  In 1861 James and Sarah have children James (24), John (20), Sarah (15), Mary (8), and Margaret (5), which means that at least 2 children are living elsewhere or have died.  I could find none of the birth records prior to 1855, but did find the second Margaret’s birth on March 25, 1856 and discovered that she was a twin.  Her twin brother was not given a name, so must have been stillborn.  Then I searched for the missing children, beginning with the first Margaret as her name had been reused, and discovered she had died on Jan. 19, 1856 in Glasgow at the age of 7 from scarlatina, less than 3 months before the birth of the twins.  There was a marriage record for Elizabeth, the other child not at home in the 1861 census, to James Dunning in Bridgeton on July 13, 1860.  By 1871, James and Sarah have only 15-year-old Margaret at home.  Searching once more, I discover all the remaining children have married except for Mary, who died on Jan. 12, 1869 in Bridgeton of phthisis (tuberculosis) at the age of 16.

Elizabeth, who married James Dunning, had 8 children. Five of the eight died in childhood, at least one died as a teenager, and I have no marriage or death information for the other two.  Elizabeth and James Dunning’s children were: Sarah, born Oct. 29, 1860 in Bridgeton, Glasgow and who died at the age of 15 on March 16, 1876 in Camlachie of bronchitis; James, Jr., born May 8, 1862 in High Church, Glasgow and who died on Aug. 16, 1863 in Bridgeton, supposedly of teething(!); Jane Phillips Dunning, born Dec. 21, 1863 in Bridgeton and who died there on Feb 22, 1868 of fever and water on the brain (hydrocephalus);  John Travers Dunning was born on Nov. 5, 1865 in Bridgeton and was the second child to survive childhood – he was living at home in Barony, Lanarkshire in the 1881 census, but I have not been able to locate him after that date (I did find a John Dunning who MIGHT be him in Patterson, Passaic, New Jersey, but I can’t find definitive proof); Robert, born on Jan. 25, 1869 in Bridgeton and died there on Jan. 2, 1870, also of teething (you can’t help but wonder at this); another son named James, Jr. who was born in Bridgeton on Mar 15, 1871 and who died there on Oct. 12, 1872 of some sort of bowel disease; David, born on Nov. 10, 1872 in Bridgeton and also died there on Mar. 4, 1873 of lung congestion; and James Alexander Dunning – known as Alexander – who was born in Bridgeton on Jan. 12, 1874.  Alexander was living at home for both the 1881 and 1891 census, but I have not found him after that time.  Elizabeth (Wellwood) Dunning died in Camlachie on Jan. 22, 1876 of bronchitis, shortly before her daughter Sarah died of the same ailment.  Elizabeth’s husband James Dunning remarried and had at least two daughters with his second wife before he died on November 7, 1904 in Bridgeton.

The oldest child of James and Sarah was James, Jr., born about 1836 in Glasgow and who married Janet Gardner in Bridgeton on Oct. 4, 1861.  They had 12 children before Janet died on Jan. 4, 1885 in Camlachie of pulmonary tuberculosis (pthisis).  James then remarried to Catherine Riddell on Oct. 2, 1889 in Camlachie.  Both James and Catherine died in Camlachie – he on Mar. 13, 1902 and she on Nov. 8, 1903.  They had no children together.  James’ children with Janet were: Margaret, born Nov. 21, 1861 in Bridgeton and died there on Apr. 2, 1863; Sarah, born Mar. 21, 1863 in Bridgeton and also died there but a week earlier on Mar. 26, 1863 at 5 days old; Mary, born Sept. 10, 1864 in Bridgeton; Jessie, also born in Bridgeton but on Feb. 17, 1867; Margaret Gardner Wellwood, born in High Church, Glasgow on Nov. 23, 1868; James Wellwood III, born in High Church on Oct. 19, 1870; Agnes, born in High Church on Jan. 8, 1873; Samuel, born in Camlachie on June 6, 1875; Alison, born in Camlachie on May 24, 1877; Elizabeth, born in Camlachie on Apr. 6, 1879 and died there unmarried on May 19, 1916; John, born Apr. 23, 1881 and died Sept. 2, 1881 both in Camlachie; and Janet (named for her mother) born in Camlachie on Oct. 29, 1882.

James, Jr. and Janet’s daughter Mary married James Cumming on June 22, 1888 in Camlachie.  They had six children: Janet, born in Calton, Glasgow on Dec. 23, 1888; Mary Ann, born in Camlachie, Glasgow on Mar. 20, 1891 and who died on Jan. 6, 1894 in Calton; James Donald, born in Camlachie on New Year’s Day 1893; Agnes Wellwood Cumming, born in Calton on Nov. 13, 1896; William, born in Calton on July 19, 1898; and John Cumming, born in Camlachie on Mar. 18, 1903.  James Cumming died in Camlachie on Sept. 26, 1914.   Mary died in Camlachie on Oct. 28, 1934.  Her son William signed her death record.  Janet married James Paterson Forbes on Mar. 22, 1917 in Dennistoun and died on May 17, 1917 while giving birth to their only child, a daughter named Janet Cumming Forbes, who lived and thrived.  She married in 1941 and died in Milton, Glasgow in 1962.  I have no record of children born to her.  Agnes married John Burbidge White on Mar. 12, 1920 in Camlachie, and they had at least one child – a son James, who signed his mother’s death record on Dec. 21, 1959 in Provan, Glasgow.  I have no further information on James Cumming, Jr. or his brothers William and John.

Jessie Wellwood married John Shanks in Camlachie on Sept. 14, 1887.  They had 10 children, all born in Camlachie: Janet Gardner Shanks, born on Oct. 26, 1887 and who died in Camlachie on May 31, 1888; Margaret Miller Shanks, born Mar. 16, 1889; John Jr., born Jan. 9, 1891 who died in Camlachie on Feb 27, 1893; James Wellwood Shanks, born Oct. 27, 1892; Jessie Wellwood Shanks, born Jan. 18, 1895; Alexander, born Oct. 28, 1896; Catherine Riddell Shanks, born Apr. 5, 1898; Agnes Wellwood Shanks, born Nov. 22, 1899; Robert, born Sept. 13, 1901, and Mary Wellwood Shanks, born Aug. 27, 1903 and who died Jan. 23, 1908 in Camlachie.

All of Jessie and John’s surviving children married.  Margaret married Charles Steele on Aug. 1, 1910 in Camlachie and they had at least one son, John, who signed his father’s death record on Mar. 20, 1942 in Shettleston, Lanarkshire.  Margaret died in 1963 in Provan, Glasgow.  John, Jr. married Agnes Rae in Calton on Sept. 21, 1915.  They had at least one child, a son John III who signed his father’s death record on Mar. 8, 1955 in Townhead, Glasgow.  The next child, Jessie, married Angus Wilkinson in Shettleston on Sept. 14, 1923.  They had at least three children including a daughter Jessie.  Jessie, the wife of Angus Wilkinson, died in Dundee, Angus in 1980.  Alexander married Susan Comack on Mar. 7, 1924 in Dennistoun.  They had at least one child, a son John who signed his father’s death record in Camlachie on Nov. 26, 1948.  Catherine married James Martin Bell on Oct. 30, 1025 in Shettleston.  James had travelled to the U.S. by way of Canada in 1923, returning in August 1925 in time for the wedding.  In 1929, Catherine and a son Thomas, age 1 year, travelled from New York, U.S. to Glasgow, Scotland arriving on July 12, 1929.  Their address is given as the same as on Catherine and James’ marriage record (her parents’ address).  They returned on board the CAMERONIA out of Glasgow to New York arriving on Sept. 30, 1929.  Her immigration visa is dated May 13, 1929 at Washington, and they are stated as returning to 22 McClellan Ave, Trenton – there is no mention of her husband James.  This record also indicates she had been in the States in 1927 as well, after her marriage and before the birth of Thomas.  In 1937, Catherine again travelled to Glasgow with her son Thomas who was born in Trenton, New Jersey and was then 9 years old.  They returned via New York on Sept.20, 1937 on board the TUSCANIA out of Glasgow – this time returning to her husband James Bell at 440 Tyler Street in Trenton.  On this record, it states that Catherine had lost her right leg above the knee as a result of a bus accident and had an artificial leg.  She had no such notation when she travelled in 1929.  Searching for Catherine’s first arrival in the States, I found her arriving from Glasgow to New York on board the CAMERONIA on Feb. 9, 1927.  Her husband met her at the port of entry and she was discharged to him.  James’ address was given as 22 McClellan Ave, Trenton.  He had arrived on board the TRANSYLVANIA out of Glasgow on Nov. 16, 1925.  I have no confirmed record of Catherine’s death.  Agnes married James Sommerville Ellison Scott Peacock on July 21, 1922 in Milton, Glasgow.  They had at least one child, a son Nicholas, named for his paternal grandfather, who signed his father’s death record in Springburn, Glasgow on Jan. 14, 1948.  Agnes died in Shettleston in 1985.  Robert also moved to the U.S.  He is found on board the CAMERONIA out of New York, arriving in Glasgow on July 12, 1929 with his married sister Catherine and nephew Thomas Bell.  He returned with them on Sept. 30, 1929, though he is returning to 512 Front Street, No. Reading, Pa.  On June 18, 1933 he is once again sailing to Glasgow from New York, this time on board the CALIFORNIA and travelling with wife Annie age 28 and son John age 1, so assume both his marriage and John’s birth took place in Pennsylvania.  I have no reliable death date for Robert.

Margaret married Andrew Murdoch on Feb. 23, 1900 in Old Monkland (Western), Glasgow.  They had at least 4 children, all born in Camlachie: John Cochrane Murdoch, born on Aug. 12, 1900; James Wellwood Murdoch, born Sept. 18, 1902 who also died in Camlachie on Nov. 11, 1902; Andrew Young Murdoch, born Jan. 13, 1904; and Janet Gardner Murdoch, born Sept. 19, 1909.  The oldest son, John, and his brother Andrew travelled to New York on the CAMERONIA out of Glasgow on Apr. 5, 1927 to join their uncle Alexander Murdoch in Trenton, New Jersey.  John returned on the CALEDONIA out of NewYork on Dec. 15, 1930.  Andrew returned to Glasgow on Feb. 20, 1933.  John married Margaret Winwright McIntosh on Christmas Day, 1931 in Hutchesontown, Glasgow.  John died in Dennistoun in 1962.  John’s brother Andrew married in Camlachie in 1943.  He died in South Glasgow in 1964.  Janet married in 1940 in Camlachie.  She died in Glasgow in 1997.  I have no record of any of their children.  Margaret died on Dec. 12, 1958 in Provan, Glasgow.  Her husband Andrew died on Apr. 5, 1937 in Townhead, Glasgow.

James Wellwood, III married first to Isabella Scott McKinley on New Year’s Day 1897 in Camlachie.  They had three children, all born in Camlachie: Isabella McAllen Wellwood born on Apr. 3, 1898; Janet Gardner Wellwood born Feb. 2, 1900; and Annie McKinley Wellwood, born prematurely on Apr. 23, 1902 and who died the following day.  Isabella died on April 28, 1902 after suffering for 8 days with pneumonia, which may have resulted in the premature birth.  James then remarried to Helen McGill on June 2, 1905 in Dalmellington, Ayrshire, who was 11 years his senior.  They had no children together.  Helen died in Waterside, Ayr on July 1, 1930.  Isabella McAllen Wellwood married in Ayrshire in 1937.  She died in Dalmellington in 1981.  Janet married John Riach on Sept. 24, 1922 in Glasgow.  She died in Baillieston, Lanarkshire in 1986 and her husband died in Glasgow in 1972.  I have no record of children born to Isabella or Janet.  James Wellwood III died in Waterside, Ayr on Apr. 12, 1947.

Agnes Wellwood married Thomas McKay on June 4, 1902 in Old Monkland (Western), Glasgow.  Agnes died at the age of 30 in Calton, Glasgow the following year on July 26, 1903 of alchoholism.  Both her husband and her father were spirit salesmen, and ready access may have contributed to her addiction.  As far as I’m aware she had no children.

James and Janet’s son Samuel Wellwood married Agnes Taylor in Camlachie on Nov. 13, 1915.  They had one child, a son Samuel, Jr. born in Glasgow on Jan. 11, 1917.  Agnes died on Feb 13, 1917 in Glasgow of septicaemia following the birth.  Samuel joined the Royal Scots Guards, having enlisted on June 24, 1916.  His service records state he had lost his right eye in an accident in 1912, prior to his enlistment.  He was called up for duty just after his son’s birth, but before his wife’s death, and was sent to France during the war.  He was discharged on Feb 18, 1918 and considered no longer fit for service, having contracted conjunctivitis in his remaining eye, possibly from mustard gas residue while he was on clean-up duty in the labor corps.  He drowned in a burn (a stream or brook) in Stewarton, Ayrshire in mid-September 1947, and his body was finally discovered after about 7 days, on Sept. 20, 1947, though it was not identified until Nov. 29, 1947.  I have no record of what happened to his son, Samuel, Jr.  I can find no death record, and wonder if he may have been taken in by his mother’s family prior to her death and raised with a different last name.

Alison Wellwood married John Cook, 19 years her senior, on July 13, 1906 in Camlachie.  I have no record of children for them, though an 18-year-old son Robert was living with them in Camlachie in 1911.  Alison died in Springburn, Glasgow in 1962.

Janet Wellwood married Henry Haddow on June 4, 1902 in Old Monkland (Western), Glasgow.  They had 2 sons: Henry, Jr., born Aug. 9, 1902 in Camlachie; and James Wellwood Haddow, born in Camlachie on Nov. 28, 1903.  In the 1911 census, Janet is living alone with her unmarried sister Elizabeth, who would die 5 years later of pulmonary tuberculosis.  The boys are boarding at the home of George and Mary Ross in Calton.  Janet’s husband Henry died in Camlachie on Mar. 18, 1943.  Janet died in Camlachie on Apr. 21, 1946.  Both sons married, Henry, Jr. to Irene Muriel Thomson on Dec. 4, 1931 in Dennistoun, Glasgow.  They had a son just prior to Irene’s death at the maternity hospital in College, Glasgow on Apr. 27, 1935.  Henry, Jr. then remarried in Camlachie in 1938.  I have no record of further children for him.  Henry, Jr. died in Bridgeton, Glasgow in 1959.  His brother James married Jane Preston on Dec. 26, 1924 in Camlachie.  I have no record of any children born to them, although James died only in 1982 in Glasgow.

I will continue with the line of James Wellwood and Sarah Mary Galloway’s third child John in the next chapter.

Just a note…

I’ve had a really busy month, so I’m a bit behind on posting.  Rest assured I’m working on the write-ups for the last two children of Moses and Jane – James and Samuel.  I hope to get another post up in early April.  Remember to subscribe!  😉
