The third child of James Wellwood and Sarah Mary Galloway was John. As stated in the last chapter he was 20 years old in the 1861 census (taken the night of Apr. 7-8, 1861) where he was still living at home. In the 1851 census (taken the night of Mar 30-31, 1851) his age is 9, but he does appear in the 1841 census (taken the night of June 6, 1841) where he was listed as aged 4 months, so must have been born in early 1841, most likely in Feb. or March (as his given age in 1841 is likely the most accurate), in Glasgow. I have found no record of his exact date of birth, which is not unusual, given the rifts in the Church of Scotland at that time – see earlier post on Joseph Wellwood for a bit of background on this.
John married Isabella Earle (sometimes spelled Arrol) on Dec. 31, 1866 in Bridgeton. They had nine children together. I had found a reference to another child, but could find no documentation to substantiate it, so will list only the nine I can be certain of. They are: James, born Oct. 1, 1868 in Bridgeton; Isabella, born May 11, 1871 in Bridgeton; Robert, born in High Church, Glasgow on Sept. 17, 1873; Margaret, born in Camlachie on Jan. 16, 1876 and who died in Glasgow on Feb. 6, 1881 of pneumonia; Janet, born Mar. 16, 1878 in Camlachie; John, born Mar. 29, 1880, also in Camlachie, as were all the following children; Walter, born Aug. 5, 1882; Margaret Earle Wellwood, born Sept. 15, 1884 and named for her maternal grandmother; and Alexander, born Aug. 7, 1889.
James married Helen Oliver on Jun 24, 1898 in Dennistoun, Glasgow. They had at least 6 children, all born in Camlachie: Janet, born Apr. 19, 1899 and who died there on May 2, 1900; John, born on Jan. 28, 1901 and who died there just over 2 months later on Apr. 10, 1901; James, Jr. born on Feb. 9, 1902; Isabella, born July 23, 1904; Helen Oliver Wellwood, born on April 15, 1907; and Robert, born May 2, 1909. It is safe to assume they continued to have children after Robert, but privacy laws in Scotland prohibit websites from having definitive information available online, and I have no documentation from other sources for them.
James, Jr. married Grace Hartley Paterson in Camlachie on Nov. 23, 1928. They had a set of triplets in mid-August 1932, although one of the three – Helen Oliver Wellwood – died at nine day old on Aug. 27, 1932. Another child, Grace Hartley Wellwood, died on July 31, 1931 at the age of 1 year and 9 months of heart failure while under anesthesia (ether and chloroform) for an operation to correct her cleft palate. James died in 2000 in Glasgow, following the death of his wife Grace also in Glasgow in 1984. James’ sister Isabella married William Harrison on Dec. 30, 1927 in Old Monkland, Lanarkshire. I have no definitive record of their children. Isabella died in Glasgow in 1967. I have no definitive marriage or death information for either Helen or Robert, and prefer not to share information I have no documentation for.
John and Isabella’s second child Isabella married James Marshall on Oct. 28, 1898 in Camlachie. They had at least two children, Isabella Arrol Marshall who was born in Camlachie on their first wedding anniversary, and John Marshall who was aged 7 years in the 1911 census. Isabella Wellwood Marshall died in Camlachie on Mar. 22, 1931.
Robert Wellwood married Mary Reid on Oct. 27, 1899 in Old Monkland, Lanarkshire. In the 1911 census they have no children living with them. Robert died on Apr. 3, 1933 in Bridgeton, Glasgow. Mary died in Glasgow in 1968.
Janet married Robert Cox on July 14, 1911 in Camlachie. They had at least one child, a son Hugh who signed his mother’s death record on Oct. 14, 1953 in Glasgow. Janet’s brother John never married. He died on Aug. 3, 1943 in Camlachie of pneumonia while suffering from colon cancer.
Walter Wellwood married Mary Nelson on Mar. 28, 1913 in Shettleston. They had at least one child, a son who signed his mother’s death record on Nov. 20, 1954 in Camlachie. Walter died in Springburn, Glasgow in 1961.
Margaret Earle Wellwood married David Allison on Sept. 23, 1910 in Camlachie. They had at least one child, a daughter. Margaret died on Nov. 21, 1931 in Rutherglen, Lanarkshire, also of colon cancer (as did her brother John). The youngest sibling of Margaret’s was her brother Alexander. He, like his brother John, also never married. Alexander died on Dec. 4, 1949 in Shettleston, Lanarkshire of lung cancer.
James Wellwood and Sarah Mary Galloway’s fourth child Sarah married on Oct. 5, 1866 in Bridgeton, Glasgow to John Murphy. They had 5 children prior to her death from tuberculosis on May 20, 1894 in Kelvin, Glasgow (her husband John had died just prior on May 2 of Bright’s disease): John, Jr. was born on June 18, 1867 in Bridgeton – I have no further records for him after the 1891 census; Margaret was born on July 4, 1869, also in Bridgeton; James was born in Bridgeton on Nov. 24, 1871; Sarah Wellwood Murphy was born in Camlachie on Aug. 3, 1884 and died there less than 2 years later on Apr. 11, 1886; and David McIntosh Murphy was born in Kelvin on March 29, 1888.
James married Catherine McKinlay in Bridgeton on Christmas Day, 1903. They had no children, according to the 1911 census, where they were both in Stobhill General Hospital in Springburn. Catherine died there on Jan. 5, 1912 of tuberculosis, and James died in the Barnhill Poorhouse in Garngadhill, also of tuberculosis, on Mar. 14, 1916. His sister Maggie signed his death record.
Margaret, known as Maggie, married first William Smith on June 21, 1895 in Camlachie. Prior to William’s death from tuberculosis in Rutherglen on Nov. 24, 1914 they had at least 3 children, all born in Rutherglen: Margaret was born on Jan. 22, 1901; Catherine McFarlane Smith, born on Nov. 29, 1902; and Sarah Wellwood Smith, born on Feb. 23, 1905. All three girls married: Margaret married Thomas Steen on Dec. 26, 1919 in Cambuslang. She died in 1958 in Rutherglen. Thomas died in Rutherglen on Apr. 16, 1955 of lung cancer. I have no record of children for Margaret; Catherine married Lawrence McKinven Gilmour on July 12, 1929 in Rutherglen. She died there on Mar. 21, 1960. Lawrence died in 1964 in Dalziel, Lanarkshire. I have no record of children for Catherine; Sarah married Arthur Higginson Ingram on Nov. 9, 1928 in Rutherglen. She died there in 1969. I also have no record of children for Sarah, also due to privacy laws. Arthur Ingram died on Dec. 28, 1957 during an operation related to his lung cancer at a hospital in East Kilbride, Lanarkshire. Following William Smith’s death Maggie remarried to Matthew Brown on June 26, 1922 in Rutherglen. Maggie died there on June 4, 1947 having had no further children.
David McIntosh Murphy married Catherine Murphy on Dec. 23, 1910 in Rutherglen. They had at least 5 children, including a son James who died on July 10, 1925 in Rutherglen at the age of 1 year old and a son John who was 1 month old at the time of the 1911 census. Catherine died on Oct. 23, 1933 in Dennistoun, and her husband David died in Rutherglen on Dec. 11, 1943.
The last surviving child of James Wellwood and Sarah Mary Galloway was Margaret, whose unnamed twin died the day of their birth, after living only about 20 minutes. Margaret married John Mushet in Dennistoun on Dec. 31, 1874 and they had at least 4 children, all born in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire: John, born Nov. 18, 1875 who also died in Kilmarnock on Jun 3, 1880; James, born Apr. 22, 1881; William, born 25 July 1883; and another son named John, born Sept. 22, 1887. I can find no further record of the family after the 1891 census when they are in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire.
The next chapter will explore the line of Moses and Jane’s son Samuel.
