Elizabeth Dougan was the seventh child of Thomas and Isabella. She was born in Glasgow, Scotland on May 13, 1862. She was living at home with her family in the 1871 Ontario census, and moved with them to Fall River in about 1878. In 1880 she is working in a cotton mill and still living at home. On Nov. 12, 1889 she married Joseph C. Bailey in Fall River. Joseph’s middle name was probably Charles, after his father. Their son, Edwin C. Bailey, was born in Fall River on Sept. 29, 1890 and died there less than a year later on July 11, 1891. Elizabeth died of pulmonary tuberculosis (phthisis) in Fall River on Feb. 12, 1892. Joseph C. Bailey remarried to Alice A. Bowditch on Dec. 20, 1893 in Fall River and had at least 2 daughters, Elsie and Elinor. He remarried again on July 11, 1905 having once more become a widower. His third wife was Katie McKeene, 11 years his junior.
Agnes H. Dougan was born to Thomas and Isabella on July 23, 1864 in Glasgow, Scotland. She was 5 years old in the Ontario census of 1971 and living at home. She was not at home in the 1880 Fall River, Mass. census, however. Instead, she is at her sister Mary’s and working in a cotton mill at age 15. There is a record for her marriage to Thomas L. Lewis on June 6, 1903 that states it is her second marriage, her first married name was Corey, and she was divorced. Going back to the 1900 census she can be found as Agnes H. Cory, married for 6 years with daughter Ida Dugan, age 18, no husband present. Looking up Ida’s birth record, I discovered Agnes listed the father’s name as Thomas – I suspect she gave her father’s information, as family lore is that Agnes was raped. Agnes and Thomas Lewis had no children together, and Agnes died on Dec. 21, 1920 in Rhode Island. Ida, born Mar. 6, 1882, married Whittaker Smith in Fall River on Oct. 31, 1904. They had a son Myron A., born Sept. 26, 1906 in Providence, R.I. Myron married after the 1930 census and had at least 2 daughters. He died of kidney cancer. Ida died about the time I was born, in the mid-1950’s, most likely in Rhode Island. She owned 2 houses at the time of her death, and left one to each of her granddaughters.
Annie, my great-grandmother, was the ninth child, as listed earlier. Thomas and Isabella’s last child was also named Thomas, after his father and the firstborn who had died in Scotland. This second Thomas was born in Ontario, Canada, most likely between 1867 and 1869. In the 1871 Ontario census, he is listed as 2 years old and living at home in Grantham, Lincoln county, Ontario, Canada. In 1880 he is 12 and also still at home, now in Fall River, Mass. There is a record of him returning to Boston from Liverpool, England on board the Bostonian on Aug. 22, 1894 at age 25, though from 1889 to 1891 he is shown in the Fall River directory as boarding at home and working as a clerk. In 1908, the Fall River directory states he has moved to Pawtucket, RI the previous year. The 1910 census shows him married to a woman named Edith and boarding in Brooklyn, New York. By 1920, he and Edith have a daughter age 9. In 1930, Thomas and Edith are still in Brooklyn and their daughter and her husband Wilbur Tooker and their infant daughter Edith are living there as well. The 1930 census also states Thomas’ first marriage took place when he was 24 years old, so about 1893-‘94. I have no further information on his first wife or marriage. Thomas’ daughter with Edith, named Catherine Mary or Mary Catherine, but called Kat or Kate, married three times (including Wilbur Tooker) and had 3 children, one from each marriage. I have no death date for her or further information on her children. Thomas opened a business in Brooklyn selling dented cans. About the time of his daughter’s third divorce, he left the house one day to run an errand and never returned. It is believed he was seen a few years later among a crowd of people at a parade in Massachusetts. I have no information on his death.
